Looking for the Good, the True, and the Beautiful

A few months ago, I thought I’d restart a blog here on my personal website, with the goal of  exploring how ideas about goodness, truth, and beauty are relevant to our daily lives. I then started questioning whether the world needs another blog, and whether it was worth the time and energy to do this, given my other commitments, and given the noise in our world.

The world may not need it, but I’m going to do it. I’ve decided to move ahead with the blog, taking the tagline seriously: “Christian Reflections on Goodness, Truth, and Beauty.” I have deep Christian commitments, and am interested in thinking out loud about how they related to goodness, truth, and beauty.

It seems to me that right now, we need less noise, but we need something. We need something deeper than coarse debates, Twitter wars, Facebook arguments, and tribalism. We need to see, understand, and feel goodness, truth, and beauty in our bones. (“Deep calls to deep” as one ancient writer put it.) We need to be inspired to bring goodness, truth, and beauty into our world.

Sometimes I’ll just offer examples of truth, goodness, and beauty, given that the focus of our world these days is slanted to conflict and drama rather than finding peace and serenity.

The world contains much suffering and evil, and things are not as they should be. But there is so much right and good in the world. Perhaps if we focus our minds more on what is good, true, and beautiful, we’ll be moved to do more in service of these great ideals.

That’s my hope for myself, as I write and reflect on these things. It’s my hope for those who read this blog as well.

Until next time.

Thanks, Mike. Look forward to your periodic updates. I agree that the focus needs to have some redemptive value (Philippians 4:8).
